I can guarantee that your attitude is one of the most critical factors determining your happiness and contentment in life, regardless of your age, place, occupation, or the ways you spend your time.
Attitude is powerful because it is one of the few things that every person has control over, regardless of other factors in life. When things are going well and we have nothing to complain about, we can choose how we will approach each day. Fortunately, even when our lives appear to be spiraling out of control, we can choose our attitude daily.
Consider an example from your own life or the life of someone you know. Can you recall when your attitude made all the difference in your life? Can you remember when everything seemed bleak, but your or someone else’s attitude made things better simply by being positive?
You may be wondering why it is essential to maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity. That’s a good question. Life has taught me that not everything will always go my way. It is doubtful that the rest of my life will be filled with joy, friendship, and peace. It’s possible, but it’s unlikely. It is much more likely that life will throw me curve balls. Tragedies, illnesses, and relationship difficulties will come my way, and my attitude will determine how those events affect me.
Maintaining a positive attitude in life allows us to remember that even during difficult times, we have much to be thankful for. Allow your mindset to reflect this perspective rather than the fact that you are not getting exactly what you want now. Allow your attitude to remember all the blessings in your life and the good things that have happened to you.
We’ve all heard the expression “attitude is a small thing that can make a big difference.” I wholeheartedly agree with whoever said those words, but I’ll go a step further and simply say that attitude is essential. Am I advocating a Pollyanna approach to all of our problems? No. Life isn’t that easy. But, in the strongest possible terms, I advocate that we adopt a positive rather than a negative attitude. In terms of leadership, you are more likely to be what you believe. So, how do you alter your reactions to external forces? Make your response a conscious priority, which means practicing every day. Humor is essential. Keep everything in perspective and relax when things aren’t going your way. I’m laughing. Others raise their hands. Entire industries become cynical.
Positive self-assurance helps you achieve more and makes others want to be associated with you. People are drawn to those with a positive outlook and a can-do attitude. Constant complainers do not amass a large following.

Here are a few ideas for gaining strength from the positive and not being sapped by the negative:
- Concentrate on the 90% of your team who will run with your vision and plan – don’t let the “negative nellies” drain you or poison your team.
- Utilize your spiritual essence at work; use your spirit and heart to propel yourself and your career forward.
- Break the negative energy cycle – if you notice yourself spiraling downward or stuck in a rut, shake things up, break up the routine, and do something quick that will lift you up.
- When you notice one of your team members engaging in unproductive or unprofessional behavior, address it immediately rather than allowing it to fester.
It takes time to practice active listening. Work on hearing what your team wants. Problems can often be solved simply by being listened to, and people can significantly improve.
You must be the emotional manager of your office, not your assistant or the newly hired hotshot. Parents must be the emotional managers in a family or chaos reigns. You must, albeit reluctantly, wear that mantel in your business. It’s part of your power and role as a leader. Hone it and your reactions to external events, and you’ll notice a positive shift in the culture around you.
When in doubt, don’t hire – keep looking, as Jim Collins says in Good to Great. You can’t consistently grow revenues faster than you can find enough of the right people to implement that growth and still be a great company. Don’t hire candidates for open positions unless they have that can-do attitude and are a good fit for your company. The skills can be taught, but not the and-then-some positive attitude.
“The prerequisite is an attitude,” my friend Doug recently stated. Employees’ attitudes are the one thing we cannot change. You either have a positive attitude, or you don’t. If employees have the ability and desire to learn, everything else can be taught to employees with positive attitudes. I’ve tried many times to teach good attitudes and have concluded that it’s about as simple as building a mud fence.”

You must learn to reprogram your mind to work differently, which will take some time. It didn’t happen overnight, so don’t expect it to go away like a headache; it doesn’t work that way. If you know anything, it is that if you have a bad attitude at work, it will follow you home, and others will have a bad attitude towards you. Never be afraid of change because it is a tool for growth. You want to change your negative thoughts and behaviors to develop a professional demeanor. That is one of many people’s problems today; they are afraid of change for the better. However, if they are not careful, it may backfire on them as well. They may send as well as receive mixed messages to themselves and others. Fear of change can be beneficial at times, but it can also be detrimental. As a result, we must learn how to use it.
Instead of focusing on the negative, concentrate on the positive.
