Be Thankful For Grammar

I never envisioned myself saying this, but I’m thankful for decent grammar. You did hear me correctly. I’m grateful that grammar exists.

I suppose that I ought to express my gratitude for having received proper grammatical instruction. Indeed, that is the case. As a writer, I quickly realized how fortunate I was to have had the opportunity to spend several years studying grammar in elementary school, junior high school, and high school.

Do you recall being forced to sit through those boring classes on grammar? I absolutely do. I don’t know how it happened. When I was younger, I was required to commit the differences between a noun, a pronoun, a verb, and an adjective to memory. I also recall being taught the distinction between the subject of a sentence and the predicate of the same sentence. I don’t really remember how the principles of grammar made it off the books and from the mouths of the teachers into my skull, but they did.

My decision to become a writer was still several years in the future when I was in grammar school. Therefore I never made it a point to pay attention there on purpose. I suppose that some of the grammar I needed to learn was absorbed into my system over time. Imagine for a moment what our culture and society would be like if there were no such thing as grammar.

To put it simply, grammar is the mechanism that enables all speakers of English to communicate using the same form of the language. What if you believed every statement concluding with a period was really a question? Sure, both you and I are aware of what a dog and a tomato are, but what if you believed that every sentence that ended with a period was a question? That seems like it might cause some confusion.

Or consider this scenario: I decide to create my next novel using lines such as “Told Billy to Sarah loving a mother being a.” Do you understand what I’ve just said? Obviously not, given that the sentence in question was not constructed with the correct English grammar.

If we’re very fortunate or just have a vivid imagination, we might be able to figure out that Sarah is conveying to Billy something about how much she enjoys her role as a mother. However, it is challenging to comprehend even the most fundamental aspects of the English language without a comprehension of grammar.

Do you like to stay up to date on current events by searching for them on the internet? Do you find it relaxing to curl up with a nice book and enjoy quiet time? Or maybe unwinding in front of the television with a good movie is more your style. If you have any interest in any of these activities, then you should have an appreciation for grammar. Reading a book, comprehending the dialogue in a movie, or even making sense of the information presented on the internet requires a proper understanding of grammar.

If you are not yet persuaded of the significance of proper grammar in everyday life, I challenge you to carry on a discussion using only incoherent phrases, just like the one I provided for you. When no one understands the ideas or inquiries of the people around them, it is pretty challenging to go through the day.

Because of the existence of grammar, fortunately, we never have to worry about miscommunicating with other people due to how we organize the words in our sentences. Be thankful for grammar since I can almost guarantee that it has simplified many aspects of your life.
